THE LORD GAVE AND THE LORD HATH TAKEN AWAY

HEROES AT THE FRONT.
PTE. WM. M. CLARKE.
Mrs. Clarke, of Mailor's Flat, has received a letter from Lieut. Pleasance, commander of the platoon to which her late son, Pte. Wm. M. Clarke was attached when he was killed in  action. The letter is as follows, dated France, 9th April, 1918:
"During the heavy fighting of the last few days many brave lads have paid the supreme sacrifice and given their all for the cause which called them forth, and, amongst them, I'm  sorry to say was your son, Pte. William Munro Clarke. He was killed instantly by a piece of shell during a hearvy bombardment prior to an enemy attack on the morning of April  3rd, 1918. His place will be hard to fill in the platoon, for he was ever ready, steady and reliable for any work that was to be done, and he was greatly liked by all the boys, who all join with me in sympathy at your great loss. His body was taken back behind the lines and buried in a little cemetery, where it will be cared for. Please accept the sympathy of the  platoon, and I trust after the first feelings of sorrow and loss has passed, you will bear up bravely and join with feelings of pride the thousands of bereaved Australia mothers,  realisiling that your son died bravely figlhting for all we hold dear."
