Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Sarah Jane Patterson, Lightfoot Street, Shepparton, Victoria

Word was received from tlhe Defence Department on Tuesday that Private Raymond Walter Patterson, 8th. Ligit Horse, 5th. Reinforcements, had been  killed in action. As reported in our last issue he had been missing since August 6th, and the sad news was broken to his sister (Mrs. Bert Knight, of Lightfoot-street), as stated by the Rev. Geo. Paul, who had receivced a telegram from the Defence Depar ment. Deceased's parents recently removed to Melbourne, and his mother, who was spending a few days here, only returned on Monday evening to her home. Private Patterson, who was a fine stamp of a soldier, celebrated his 21st birthday in camp at Broadmeadows, and was born in the Caniambo district. He was educated at the Violet Town State- school, and followed farming pursuits prior to enlisting and was in the employ of Mr. Jas. Laws, of Benalla-road for about four years. He was a member  of the 15th Light Horse C squadron (Shepparton troop) and took great interest in military work before enlisting, and was very popular with the  members of that body. A brother, Private Robert (Roy) Patterson, is serving at the front.
