BIOGRAPHICAL - LATE CPL. S.H. MAYFIELD

"Cpl Stanley Howard Mayfield of the 8th Reinforcements, 32nd Battalion who died in Adelaide last week was of a kindly unassuming nature and was held in high esteem by all with whom he came in contact. He served with distinction in the Boer War with the 4th South Australian Imperial Bushmen for which he held two medals. He was the only representative from South Australia who rode in the King's escort at the Coronation of the late King Edward VII. Soon after the outbreak of the present war he resigned a position of Station Manager at Streaky Bay and enlisted. Deceased who was 38 years of age has left a widow and three children."

July 29th The sun is just rising, another Sunday morning. (6 oclock in the evening) A & B Squadrons are out on picquet. I am in charge of one lot, Troopers Bunn, Mayfield, & Plate, there are about 150 men Boers in front of us on the hills some are about one thousand yards off & will get a bullet or two if they come any closer.
August 3rd Was on picquet again last night, & had a very good time. We shifted our camp to-day about a mile to the north-east. ... Our mess was split up to-day it is now Farley Plate Muir & Mayfield.
August 4th Captain Norton left us this morning about day-light for Cape Town Lieut Leane takes command of B Squadron during his absence. T Muir & I are just making a stew for Plate & Mayfield who were out all night on patrol.
Dec 2nd Reveille at two, ... We followed the line as far as Bronkhurstspruit are now camped for dinner. We heard this morning that Gen Paget has had three days fighting. Sixteen New Zealanders have been wounded killed. They were buried in one grave. & 60 Boers killed.
6pm) Arrived at Bronkhurst-spruit about three oclock & heard that in the fighting a few days ago, two more of our men were killed & two wounded. The killed were Sargeant McCabe & Trooper Page of A Squadron & the wounded Trooper Johnstone of A & Mayfield of B, I went & saw the latter, Mayfield is hit pretty badly. We expect to go out in a day or so.
