Lawrence Henry Cutts was born in South Australia, 1895. He grew up in Unley and lived with his parents, Charles Edward Cutts and Florence Edith Cutts and his older brother Ernest Lionel Shaw Cutts. He worked as a boot finisher before enlisting in the A.I.F at the age of 18 years and 11 months. He enlisted on the 14th of September 1914, he was apart of the 16th Infantry Battalion. His rank being Lance Corporal.

On 4 August in 1914 Great Britain declared war on Germany. Many Australians were rushed to Melbourne, one of them being Cutts. During this time the 4th Brigade was being formed. In December Cutts embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Ceramic, 22 December 1914 and made it to Alexandria, Egypt in Feburary. Cutts and the 4th Brigades later made it to Gallipoli where they fought in the Gallipoli battle.

During the Gallipoli battle, Cutts was reported as missing on 8 August 1915, however, later enquiries confirmed that he was 'killed in action' the day he went missing, two months prior to his 20th birthday
