Biography contributed by Eastern Fleurieu 7 - 12 School

Henry Illingworth Taylor was born on the 21st of July 1889, in Daylesford, Victoria, the son of Norman Taylor and Emma Sarah. His father Norman worked for the Victorian Government as an artist, geologist and botanist. Henry moved to North Adelaide with his mother after his father passed on the 22nd of June 1894.

On the 9th of December 1915, Henry married Dorothy Sarah Kingsnorth Mallyon in St Paul’s Church, Port Pirie. Dorothy gave birth to one son, named William Illington Taylor, towards the end of 1916. Dorothy, unfortunately, passed shortly after on the 31st of October 1916. The baby was then nurtured by his grandmother, Susan Mallyon.

During this time, Henry was working as a bank accountant for the National Bank before he enlisted on the 1st May 1916 at Keswick, South Australia.

On the 16th December 1916, Henry embarked from Adelaide on HMAT Berrima as part of the 43rd Infantry, 6th Reinforcement, as a Lieutenant.

In 1917, the 43rd Battalion was deployed into Flanders to serve in trenches, and by June, the battalion assisted with the battle of Messines and, 3 months later, served in the Third Battles of Ypres. In 1918, they fought in the Somme valley and in April halted a German Spring offensive.

Henry was wounded twice during his service, with him being hospitalised at the 3rd London General Hospital in Wandsworth and once again in France during August 1917 as he was hospitalised at the 7th General Hospital in St. Omar. Henry had also arisen with a serious hearing issue and was concerned that his condition would worsen and make it difficult to return to his previous occupation. He subsequently applied to be discharged in July 1918 so he could return home to look after his infant son.
