Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Fred Thurlow Fisk was a natural born British subject and born on June 30, 1889, in Parkside, Adelaide, South Australia. He grew up with his parents, John William Fisk and Eva Jane Fisk, and was the brother of Eva Fisk, Tom Austin Fisk, James Watkin Fisk, Harold Leslie Fisk, Gertrude Talbot Fisk and Olive Millicent Fisk. Fred's early education took place at East Adelaide Public School, which led to his job as a Bank Clerk before the enlisting into the war.

At the age of 25 Fred enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on December 30, 1914, in Liverpool, NSW. Fred joined 13th Infantry Battalion as a Private and sailed on the HMAT A49 Seang Choon from Sydney on February 11, 1915.

The 13th Battalion was trained in Egypt and played a pivotal role in significant battles, including Gallipoli, the Somme, and Passchendaele, contributing to stop the German advance in 1918. Fred later was taken on strength (TOS) and transferred to the 10th Australian Field Artillery Brigade. Where, he then was awarded the role of Corporal on 1/4/1916, at the age of 27.

Tragically, Fred Thurlow Fisk met his untimely death on September 26, 1917, in Belgium, where he was killed in action and later buried in Hooge Crater Cemetery, Passchendaele, Flanders, Belgium. The sacrifice he made for his country is commemorated through the medals he earned: the Star Medal, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal.

Fred Thurlow Fisk was a courageous and selfless young man, which is evident through how he served in the war and received his rank of corporal at such a young age. His memory lives on through the medals awarded for his contributions to the war effort and the lasting impact he made on those who knew him.

Lest we forget.
