Biography contributed by Joy Dalgleish

Charles  was born on 21 October 1879, at Brighton, England, second son of Ambrose STENNING and Frances Ann GREENFIELD. He married on 8 Dec 1900, Alice Emily KNIGHT who was known as Em, daughter of  Ambrose KNIGHT and Mary Ann FREEMAN. They migrated to Australia, circa 1909-10.

Charles worked on the railways, and he and Emily settled in their early years in Busselton, Western Australia. In letters back to his family in England, Charles extolled the virtues of the West; the way of life and the wonderful dry climate compared to England. Charles enjoyed duck shooting and fishing whenever he could. Because of this, two Brothers, Frank and Ambrose, followed Charles's recommendations and migrated to Western Australia soon after.

Emily was reputed to be a good singer and became a member of several choirs. They had two daughters, Irene and Mabel. After a few years in Busselton the family moved to live in the Perth suburb of Shenton Park. Charles joined the Army in 1915 and was wounded twice during World War I.  As a soldier he received 5 shillings (50 cents) a day plus one shilling (10 cents) as deferred pay. After being discharged in 1919 with the proceeds of his deferred pay Charles and Em bought a house on half an acre at Mundaring where they grew fruit trees and sold eggs. They lived there for a number of years but then moved to Victoria Park, near Perth where they spent more than 30 years.

Charles died on May 12 1966 in the Hollywood Repatriation General Hospital, Nedlands, at the good age of 86, Interred  No. 9 Central area at Karrakatta Cemetery
