Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

George Reginald Vivian FOOTE, (Service Number 1944) was born on 13 July 1897 in London. He had begun working with the NSW Railways as a shop boy in the Electrical Branch of the Tramways at Randwick in late 1914, but only two months later was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces. On his enlistment papers, of 22 January 1915 he gives his age as 19 years 6 months, but this was incorrect as he was only 17. He also claimed a year and six months previous experience in the 39th Militia and gave his calling as a commercial artist.
He left Sydney on 13 April 1915 on HMAT ‘Kyarra’.

He died of wounds received in action at Gallipoli on 17th December 1915 and was buried in Shell Green Cemetery at Anzac. Foote was one of the last to die at Gallipoli as the peninsula was evacuated between the 15th and the 20th of that month.

George Reginald Vivian FOOTE (Service Number 1944) was born on 13 July 1897 in London. He began working with the NSW Railways as a shop boy in the Electrical Branch of the Tramways at Randwick in late 1914. Only two months later he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces. On his enlistment papers, of 22nd January 1915 he gives his age as 19 years 6 months, but this was incorrect as he was only 17. He left Sydney on 13th April 1915 on HMAT ‘Kyarra’ for Gallipoli.

He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 1st April. He had three admissions to hospital at Mudros (on the Greek island of Lemnos) away from Gallipoli, for Influenza and gastro-enteritis. He reverted to the ranks for incompetence in December.

He died of wounds received in action at Gallipoli on 17th December 1915. He was buried in Shell Green Cemetery at Anzac. Foote was one of the last to die at Gallipoli as the peninsula was evacuated between the 15th and the 20th of that month.

George Reginald FOOTE Service Number: 1944

 

Although born in England, he moved to Australia, New South Wales, Bankstown. He was adopted by Amelia Ethel FOOTE (3) in which he had a good relationship with Reginald Vivian FOOTE, he had said “In the event of my death I give my whole property to my Mother,”(4) He attended Sydney Technical High school from 1908-1909 and graduated from 1912-1913 (based off his age and enlistment papers) he later becames a shop boy in the Electrical Branch of the Tramways at Randwick in late 1914 (11). A few months later, he would lie about his age of 17 to an age of 19 to enlist in the army.(12) on the 16th January (6). Reginald was placed in the 3rd battalion 5th reinforcement (8). He departed from Sydney on the 13th of April (9)and to never come back, buried in Shell Green Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula. (10)

His service records shows that he was promoted to Lance Corporal before departing Sydney. (13) Showing he was exceptional and a natural during his training in Australia. 

During the Gallipoli campaign Reginald landed on ANZAC Cove (14), and fought during the early battles and the Third Turkish Attack on Anzac Cove on 1915 19th of May. His battalion would fight battles of Sari Bair (Lone Pine and Nek) however during this time he would be hospitalised. He was reportedly hospitalised three times (15) recorded to be sick from Influenza, and Gastroenteritis.

(16) He rejoined his unit (3rd battalion 5th reinforcement) on October 9th 1915 (17). On the 4th of December he was reverted to the rank of a Private due to incompetence(18), and died 13 days later on 17th of December from a wound he received in battle (19).
