Vale James William Hignett OAM, 1949 - 2024
We at Virtual War Memorial Australia would like to extend our condolences to the family of James William Hignett OAM who passed away on the 5th of May 2024 aged 75.
'Bill', as he was known, served in the Vietnam War with 86 Transport Platoon, Royal Australian Army Service Corps. A teacher by profession, Mr Hignett had no choice in 1970 when he was conscripted for national service under the ballot scheme.
He was a lifelong and passionate educator with a special interest in Indigenous education. He was awarded an OAM in 2014 and just last year Bill was recognised with an RSL Anzac of the Year award for his service to the community. Bill was a long time union organiser and veteran’s advocate.
Rest in Peace.
