Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 12th October 1917, Private William Lester Seymour, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2651), horse trainer from 13 Annie Street, Linwood (Wickham) New South Wales, was Killed in Action when buried by an enemy artillery shell, Zonnebeke, Belgium, 1st Battle of Passchendaele, Passchendaele Campaign, age 20.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 22nd February 1897 to John (died 3.7.1938, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 77), and Jane Ann Seymour (died 24.9.1947, Islington, N.S.W., age 77, mother of 5 daughters and 3 sons), William enlisted on the 31st August 1916 at Rutherford, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Napier on the 17th November 1916.

Reported Missing in Action 12.10.1917.

Reported Killed in Action 7.2.1918.

Mr. Seymour’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 23), Belgium.
Place of Association – Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

William’s name has also been inscribed on the Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1) and the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the Seymour gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of William’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country.
