Lionel was born in Nathalia, Victoria in 1894, eldest of three children of Arthur Patton Davies (b1870 in Melbourne, Victoria) and his first wife Catherine Bridget O'Neill (b1871 in Melbourne, Victoria). Arthur and Catherine married in 1893 in Nathalia, where they settled and raised their family and Arthur was an Estate Agent and Commercial Traveller. Following Catherine's death in 1905, Arthur moved to Sydney where he remarried (in total, another four marriages) - he served in the Militia, and in the AIF (Home Service; Service No:101) from 4 November 1916 - 1 January 1919 as a Private and Staff Sergeant attached to Australian Army Pay Corps - Arthur gave his occupation as Clerk at enlistment. Arthur worked as a Commercial Traveller/Salesman.

In 1917 in Essex, England Lionel married his first wife Margaret Morey Croydon (b1895 in Surrey, England). Following his Discharge from the Army, Margaret travelled to Melbourne in 1920, arriving on board the Bremen. Lionel and Margaret settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Lionel worked as a Labourer. Margaret returned to England with the two children in 1922 on board the Esperance Bay, and filed for Divorce in 1932. Lionel moved to Brisbane, where he worked as a Salesman, returning to Sydney in the 1930s. Lionel worked in Sydney as a Salesman and Engineer, and in 1942 remarried to Dorothy Lydia Moles. Lionel and Dorothy settled in Sydney, where Lionel worked as an Engineer and Organiser before retiring to Conjula in Shoalhaven in the late 1950s. Lionel died in 1967.
