Leslie Samuel Lambert

On his War Records, Marriage and Death records, he is named as Leslie Samuel Lambert. However his birth registration shows as Samuel Leslie Lambert. Known as Les, he was born Monday 9 March 1891 at Towitta. He was the third child and son of Samuel Lambert and Harriet Bywaters.

Les was 16 or thereabouts when the family moved from Towitta to the Galga area in late 1907.

Whilst in Camp Morphettville, he married Lily Boromeo on 29 April 1916 at Congregational Manse, Glenelg. His brother Ernest also a soldier, was a witness.
Les enlisted 4 February 1916 and joined the 43rd Infantry Battalion AIF. Enlistment states that he was a farmer, age 24 years 11 months, height 5 feet 11 inches, Weight 148 lbs, medium complexion with hazel eyes and brown hair.
Religion: Congregational. Next of Kin his mother, but later changed to his wife.
Embarked from Outer Harbour on 9 June 1916 on the “Afric”. On board was his brother Ernest, and cousins David (known as Amos) and Edward Lambert. Wounded in action 2 August 1917 with gunshot wound and sent to England. In February 1918 suffered from Asthma and again admitted to hospital in England. Notification letters of wounds and illness sent to Mrs L Lambert, Bowen Vale Victoria.
Discharged 23 September 1918 Reason for Discharge: medically unfit. Total Service: 2 years 232 days of which Service Abroad was 2 years 27 days.

From the book “The Galga Story” ”all enlisted boys from Galga were given a farewell in the form of a dance in the Galga Hall. On their homecoming each soldier was given a "Welcome Home" and each presented with a suitcase and money”.

Leslie’s name is on the Galga War Memorial which was unveiled 25 April 2012.

After the war they lived 5 miles west of Veitch. The farm was sold early 1941, it is not known to the author, when they left the district but after 1946.

Les died Sunday 17 July 1966 aged 75 years and buried in Centennial Park, Adelaide, in the “Derrick Gardens”
