One man from the 52nd died on 9 September 1916:
Lance Corporal Reginald Henry CORNISH #3362, 25 years old from West Leedervile WA (born St Arnaud VIC)

Reginald Henry CORNISH was a clerk and enlisted in August 1915 along with his younger brother, Wilfred John CORNISH #3363, joining the 11th Reinforcements to the 12th Bn as they embarked from Australia 3 months later on HMAT A24 Benalla. After arrival in Egypt he was admitted to the 4th Auxiliary Hospital, Abbassia with the mumps. He was then transferred to the 52nd Bn and promoted to lance corporal on 13 March 1916. Along with the battalion, he proceeded to France in June.

Cornish was wounded in action on 14 August 1916. The 52nd were in support of the rest of the 13th Brigade which were preparing for an attack on Mouquet Farm. Shellfire was intense and there were many casualties, as men from the 52nd carried supplies up to the attacking units. With serious shrapnel wounds to the right knee, he was recovered to 4th Australian Field Ambulance and then transferred to 44th Casualty Clearing Station on 15 June 1916. The next day he was sent by ambulance train to the 26th General Hospital at Etaples on the French coast. He died of his wounds on 9 September 1916. He was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
