Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery, not forgotten.
96 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 19th December 1926, Private James Paul L Davis, 5th Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-765A), bolt maker from 32 Church Street, Wickham, New South Wales and 2 Henry Street, Wickham, N.S.W., father of two (George & Jim), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 32. CATHOLIC 1-26. 66.
Born at Islington, New South Wales on the 27th May 1894 to Thomas Edward and Margaret E Davis of Mount View, New South Wales; husband of Mary Gladys Davis nee Dallas (married 1921, died?), James enlisted January 1916 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Wounded in action - 8.12.1916 (shell shock, slight).
Admitted to hospital 15.10.1917 (eczema), 14.11.1917 (scabies), 12.3.1918 (laryngitis).
James returned home July 1919, being discharged on the 4th September 1919.
Mr. Davis’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1).
The gravesite for James has curbing with marble chip and a headstone for another person, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite.
Older brother Thomas Edward (3rd & 5th Australian Pioneer Battalions, Reg No-321, an Original Anzac, born 1890, Tighes Hill, New South Wales, died 3.10.1933, age 43) also resting at the cemetery. ANGLICAN 2-119. 11.
