Harry worked at Clarkson Ltd in Adelaide when he enlisted. He had married his wife Ann Phillis Roney, daughter of John William Roney of lower North Adelaide, on 7 January 1908 at St Paul’s Church Flinders Street by Rev. Canon Sunter. Henry was the eldest son of John and Marian Polain of 87 Melbourne Street North Adelaide. Her brother Cyril George Roney also enlisted.
Harry left to join the British Expeditionary Forces at Alexandria on 10 May 1916, arriving in Marseilles France on 18 May 1916. He was taken on strength on 11 August 1916 and killed in action on 5 November 1916.
Harry’s three children James William, Kenneth Cyril and Mahala Mary were recipients when his Will was declared. The family had moved to 32 Mann Terrace North Adelaide on his enlistment but after his death moved to 34 Gilbert Street Gilberton.
