Biography contributed by Robert Wight

James Stewart Campbell, aged 21, enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne on 17 July 1915. He departed Australia on 11 October 1915 and, upon arrival in Egypt, was transferred to the 8th Battalion in January 1916. He left Egypt on 26 March 1916 and arrived in France five days later.

He was wounded in action on 25 July 1916, on the third day of the Battle of Pozieres. Shortly after he returned from hospital, he was transferred to the 2nd Light Trench Mortar Battery on 4 September 1916. While he spent much of 1917 in and out of hospital with various skin complaints, often caused by the terrible conditions endured in the trenches, his unit saw further action at Menin Road and Broodseinde Ridge during September and October 1917.

He also participated in the defeat of the German Spring Offensive at Hazebrouck in April 1918. His unit was still in this region on 13 June 1918 when he was mortally wounded by German artillery fire while in the line at Strazeele, about 5 km east of Hazebrouck.

He was evacuated to the advanced dressing station of the 2nd Australian Field Ambulance however died of his wounds later the same day and was buried in the Borre British Cemetery.
