Herbert was born in 1891 in Mackay QLD to Mary Jane Gaffney and registered on his birth certificate as Herbert Gaffney. Mary Jane married Herman Robert  Fredericks in Mackay, QLD, and they had two children. Herbert took the surname of his step - father.

Herbert was working as a Baker in Mackay, QLD when he enlisted in Brisbane in the AIF in 1915. He served with 3 and 8 Field Ambulance as a Private (Service No: 8399) and was Discharged in January 1918.

In Novemebr 1915 Herbert married his first wife Margaret Ellen Atkinson (born 1892 in Warwick, QLD), and in February 1918 he joined the Metropolita Fire Brigade in Brisbane. Herbert was a Fireman with the Fire Brigade. In 1933 he married Mildred Jane Hair (nee Sanders) and Opera Singer. Herbert died in Brisbane in 1953
