105 years ago today, on the 28th April 1918, Private Ernest Hemmings, 46th Battalion (signaller, Reg No-2914), miner & machinist (Public Works Department), from "Sylvia", 71 Railway Lane, Wickham, New South Wales, father of one (Rita, born 8.7.1903, New Lambton, N.S.W. to Ernest and Olivia R Hemmings, died 12.11.1923, age 20 years, 4 months, sleeping here), was Killed in Action while in a trench, hit by shrapnel or piece of artillery shell in back of head, Villers-Bretonneux, France, age 37 years 6 days. Grave marked with cross.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 22nd April 1881 to Thomas and Mary Maria Hemmings; husband of Olivia Reid Hemmings nee Christian (married 1902, of Collaroy Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., died 17.4.1904, Wallsend, N.S.W., sleeping at METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 24 NE. 28.), Ernest remarried to Elizabeth Ann Hemmings nee Dawber (Lizzie, married 1905, Wickham, N.S.W., of Albert Street, North Lambton, N.S.W., Lizzie remarried to George H A Bedford, 1920, New Lambton, N.S.W., died 12.7.1925, age 40, of 24 Belford Street, Hamilton West, N.S.W., sleeping at memorialised gravesite of Ernest - METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 23 SW. 3), Ernest enlisted on the 2nd October 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Port Napier on the 17th November 1916.

Admitted to hospital 19.10.1917 (carbuncle, neck), 10.12.1917 (prurigo nodularis - chronic dermatosis of unknown etiology and urethritis).

Ernest is resting at Adelaide Cemetery, Villers-Bretonneux, France. Plot III Row K Grave 4.

Mr. Hemmings’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham (Hawkins Oval) Soldiers' Memorial, Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), Newcastle Independent Order of Rechabites Honour Roll and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name would be inscribed on the New Lambton Order of Rechabites, Evening Star Tent, No-71 Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at the Hemmings and Bedford memorialised gravesite in remembrance of Ernest's service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 23 SW. 1.
