Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery,  not forgotten.

105 years ago today, on the 10th October 1917, Gunner Joseph Leo Carney, 2nd Australian Field Artillery Brigade (Reg No-1234), butcher (Messrs. T. Fenwick and Sons, Boolaroo, N.S.W.), from First Street, Boolaroo, New South Wales, was Killed in Action during the Battle of Poelcappelle, Belgium, Passchendaele Campaign, age 22 years 9 months.

Born at Goulburn, New South Wales on the 12th December 1894 to Daniel (died 7.4.1923) and Bridget Carney (died 7.5.1929? 22.3.1938? remarried as BLAIR, 1927?), Joseph enlisted June 1915 with the 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 16 2 1916 (influenza).

Joseph is resting at The Huts Cemetery, Belgium. Plot IX Row D Grave 8.

Mr. Carney’s name has been inscribed on the Boolaroo District Pictorial Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 14th December 1916, now inscribed with 148 names and photos, 26 Fallen, located at Boolaroo/Speers Point RSL sub-Branch, Unit 9 / 24 Main Road, Boolaroo, N.S.W.). Name possibly inscribed on the Boolaroo M.U.I.O.O.F. Roll of Honour (unveiled on the 19th August 1916, whereabouts unknown).

The gravesite of Joseph’s father Daniel has curbing but unfortunately no headstone, therefore no memorial inscription to tell us of the loss of his son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of his service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-18. 38.

Younger brother Donald Nicholas (also known as Snowy, Light Trench Mortar Battery & 13th Battalion, Reg No-1199, of First Street, Boolaroo, New South Wales and Second Street, Boolaroo, N.S.W. and Henry Street, Boolaroo, N.S.W., born 1897, died 14.1.1939, age 41) resting at the cemetery. CATHOLIC 2-56. 15.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
