Son of Lionel Arthur and Pauline Minna Poole, of Coorparoo, Queensland. A.F.I.A., A.A.U.Q.

 

NNA, ADF Srials, WW2 Roll, AWM Flying Officer Bruce Lionel POOLE was one of 7 RAAF members killed in the loss of No 13 Squadron Ventura A59-84 when it crashed on the 27th of January, 1945.

The other crew members were:

S/No 423956 Flying Officer (FLGOFF) Charles George WELL. Charles enlisted on the 18th of July, 1942;

S/No 427499 FLGOFF Charles George WELLS, Charles enlisted on the 18th of July, 1942;

S.NO 427499 FLGOFF Peter Wilberforce CLARKSON;

S/No 426311 FLGOFF Nerden Anderson CHOWNS. Nerden enlisted on the 20th of June, 1942,

S/No 22465 Flight Lieutenant George Alexander ANDERSON. George enlisted on the 20th of May, 1940.

S/No 403695 Warrant Officer John KAY enlisted on the 2nd of March, 1941.

S/No 46571 Leading Aircraftman James David PUGH enlisted on the 23rd of February, 1942.

The names of all of these men are listed on the Northern Territory Memorial at Adelaide River and at Panel 100 in the Commemorative Area of the Australian War Memorial. The attached photo from the AWM archives shows four members of the crew of Ventura A59-84.

These airmen were four of six crew members on board Ventura aircraft A59-84 which took off from Gould Strip, Batchelor, NT, on the morning of 27 January 1945 and returned twenty minutes later requesting landing instructions. The aircraft, which it is believed was experiencing instrument failure, struck the ground during the approach, killing all on board.
