Biography contributed by Michael Silver

Official information was received on Saturday, 6 November 1915 announcing that Captain Harold Nash son of Major and Mrs. E. Nash, of West Maitland, had been killed in action. The information came from Colonel Luscombe of Victoria Barracks, who wlred as follows:—"Officially reported that Captain H. L. Nash, Second Battalion, killed in action between August 6 and 9. Previously reported missing. Please inform Major Nash, Sempill Street, and convey the deep regret and sympathy of the Commonwealth Government in the loss that it and the army have sus-tained by the death of this officer."

Previous to enlisting, the late Captain Nash acted as deposition clerk to the Tamworth Land Board, and was amongst the first of the Australians to enlist. He was in command of the Tamworth Company of the 13th Regiment, and was particularly fond of military life. He was a first-class rifle shot, and took part as a member of the team of D Company when they won the rifle competition at Newcastle, in which some crack shots took part. The late Captain Nash held the position of Second Lieutenant when he enlisted, and was promoted to Lieutenant at Liverpool camp, while he secured his rank as Captain on the field, he was a very popular officer, and was held in high esteem by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. The news of his death was received with deep regret, and much sympathy is expressed with Major and Mrs. Nash, in the loss they have sustained. Deceased would have attained his 26th birthday next Christmas Eve.

In a letter to his mother (written on August 6, a day or two before his death), he said:—"All is excitement and bustle here today, making the last preparations for an attack on John Turk, which is going to happen this day. We (B Company) are to be the first of this battalion over the fence, so we have the position of honour; also a fairly long run, with some wire and scrub to get through. Of course some of us will get right over, and some won't. I hope to be among the former."
