Harry Whaling was a veteran of Gallipoli and the Western Front in the First World War

Sergeant Harry Maurice Whaling NX18480 of 2/160 Australian Supply Depot Platoon and Private Edward John Collins VX50622 of 2/188 Australian Supply Depot Platoon were killed when RAAF 36 Squadron Dakota A65-34 (VH-CUF) crashed while performing airdrop duties to Australian ground forces near But in Wewak, New Guinea

Four of the RAAF crewmen were also killed:

Flight Lieutenant Kenneth Robert Charles Mathews 407125 of 36 Squadron

Pilot Officer Donald Gordon Campbell 418718 of 36 Squadron

Corporal Arthur Edward Guy 142679 of 37 Operational Base Tadji

Corporal Keith Hardham 129265 of 37 Operational Base Tadji

There were two survivors: Squadron Leader Lewis Keith Jackson 261723 RAAF and Private Joseph George Law TX13582 (T24441) of 2/160 Australian Supply Depot Platoon
