Walter was the youngest of ten children of Alfred William Jarrett (born 1866 at Richmond River in NSW) and Helena (Ellen) Lee (born 1873 at Richmond River in NSW. Alfred was a Labourer in Ballina NSW when he married Ellen in 1894. The family moved to Murgon in QLD in the early 1900s, where Alfred was a Labourer until his death in 1912.

Walter was working as a Labourer in Richmond, NSW when he enlisted briefly in the ACMF in 1940, serving for a few months as a Private (Service No:NX11747) with 2/3 Infantry Battalion Reinforcements. In 1942 he was in Cairns, QLD working as a Labourer when he enlisted again - and served with the Australian Army (Private: Service No:QX32790) with 2/24 Australian Infantry Battalion. He was Discharged in March 1946. Brothers-in-Law Denis (Private, Service No:Q148286) and Francis (Private, Service No:Q108445) Tite, and Ralph Davey (Lance Bombardier, Service No:VX42155) also served in WWII.

In 1942 Walter married Doris Margaret Tite (born 1908 in Ipswich, QLD). They settled at Landsborough in QLD where Walter was a Poultry Farmer until the early 1960s when he and Dorothy relocated to Jimna and then Beechmere via Caboolture, QLD where Walter worked as a Labourer. Following Dorothy's death in 1980, Walter married Leila Mary Munt (nee Shelkins, born 1908 in Ipswich, QLD) in 1985 in Redcliffe, QLD. Leila died in 1995 and Walter died in 1998.
