Served his smithing apprenticeship with A.H. Gooding and later with M. Ryan both of Port Pirie, SA

Address at the time of enlistment was given as H.C. Francis of Robert Street, Port Pirie, SA.

Husband of Lily Matilda Olson nee March of Meninge West, SA formerly on Telford Road, Redbourne, Cheney, Wiltshire, England. Carl and Lily married on 20 May 1918 in the Swindon and Nighworth Parish Church, England. Vicar Ernest R. Knapp officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 13 May 1919 aboard the family ship HT Bremen disembarking on 23 July 1919
