Memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery. 

104 years ago today, on the 23rd March 1918, Driver Leslie Walter Day, 30th Battalion (Transport Section), also known as Lionel, carpenter of "Deasley", 42 Swan Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was killed in action at Neuve Eglise, Belgium, age 24.

Born at Islington, New South Wales on the 30th June 1893 (as Walter Leslie) to Thomas Christopher (died 1937 - no death or funeral notice located) and Susannah (died 1944) Day, Leslie enlisted July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Leslie is resting at Westhof Farm Cemetery, Belgium. Plot II Row D Grave 2 ( see photo courtesy of Eddy Lin, Belgium).

Mr. Day’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor, Hamilton Methodist Church Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 12th June 1916, 28 names originally inscribed, 60 names now inscribed, 6 Fallen), Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Newcastle Progressive Carpenters & Joiners Roll of Honour (not located) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

Leslie has been memorialised at his parent’s gravesite at Sandgate Cemetery, and I have placed poppies in remembrance of the supreme sacrifice of their son during The Great War. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) C NE. 67.
