Shortly after the outbreak of war he left his farming property in the Warren River district, WA, in the care of a neighbour with the object of joining the AIF. However, he was delayed by ill health in carrying out his intention, and was not accepted into the AIF until 1February 1915, when he went into camp, remaining there until he embarked on 1 March 1916 on the troopship "Shropshire". He went into action in August 1916, was wounded several months later and sent to England. While in England he qualified for commissioned rank at the School of Instruction, Tidworth, but his commission was delayed owing to there being no vacancy in his battalion. He was promoted to corporal and returned to France in November 1917. He was killed by a machine gun bullet on the morning of 10 August 1918, during the big advance on Lihons, and died with the words "Come on boys!" on his lips.
