Biography contributed by Claude McKelvey

Louis Gerald Griffin was the son of Gerald Griffin and Margaret Gertrude Griffin (nee Fogarty). He indicated on papers he completed for repatriation from South Africa in 1907 that he was born in Bundaberg in 1872 but no records appear in the Qld Birth Registry records for that date.

He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a private S.N. 332 in the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. It appears he may have been discharged in, or returned to, South Africa where he worked as a miner until 1907 when he applied for repatriation back to Australia. His second service was as a Private S.N. 698 in the 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF, WW1 during which he was killed in action at Gallipoli. In his Attestation Paper he noted his previous service in the Boer War.
