Footnote from p.253 of the publication "A History of 2/17 Australian Infantry Battalion 1940-1945"
Cpl Rupert Clarence "Clarry" Brooks enlisted from Sydney and was a veteran of the Tobruk, Tel el Eisa, El Alamein and Lae campaigns. For valour on this occasion in the assault [9 Oct 1943 at The Knoll near Jivevaneng] and his alertness and resolution in the face of subsequent counter-attacks in a vital position where the enemy made determined efforts to break through the defences, and his encouragement to others, he received the immediate award of the MM.
