Lance Sergeant 5767 BENJAMIN FREDERICK SMART.

LSgt Benjamin Smart was born on 26th June 1896 at Emu Bay, North Western Tasmania. He was the third son of William Smart and Mary Ann Hay and had been an Army Cadet for five years prior to enlisting in April, 1916. Benjamin arrived in France in November, 1916; he was first injured on 11 February, 1917, a gunshot wound to the face and chest and on 8 June, a gunshot wound to his arm, followed by short periods of recovery. Benjamin was promoted to Lance Corporal on 19 November, 1917, Corporal on 1 April, 1918 and Lance Sergeant on 23 April, 1918, just seven days before he was killed.

Benjamin Benjamin Smart was killed along side Private 2850 THOMAS MICHAEL MCGREE and they were buried in adjoining graves at Mericourt-L'Abbe Communal Cemetery Extension, Picardie, France. Both men had brothers who were seriously wounded and discharged from the AIF; repatriated to Australia earlier in 1918.
Lest we forget.
