He married Violet May Middleton in 1908 in Victoria. They had two children during their marriage. He died as a young father on 28 June 1916 in Hainaut, Belgium, at the age of 33.
His younger brother 399 Cpl. Angus Campbell Aitchison 6th Battalion AIF was killed in action 25th April 1915, age 29.

His middle name Gyler ;is in tribute to the ancestor Sarah GYLER born in Londonderry. She married John AITCHISON from County TYRONNE. They emigrated to Victoria. Their son also John Aitchison emigrated from Glasgow to Victoria. They were master bakers and set up in Geelong where John was born. ANNIE MCDONALD was the daughter of Donald MCDonald and MARY MITCHELL. DONALD came from near Talisker on SKYE while Mary came from Corifin COUNTY Clare. She came out to be a governess but fell in love with DONALD who was working on the roads on the BELLERAINE PENINSULAR . 'Killed in action 28th June 1916 in Belgium. Buriel 28th June 1916 Berks Cemetery Extension -Rosenberg Chateau Military Cemetery was used by the fighting units from November 1914 toAugust 1916. The extension was begun in May 1916 and used until March 1918. Together the extension and cemetery were sometimes referred to as 'Red Lodge'. AItchison means red soil.
He had two children -Thomas George was born in 1912 and died in 1914. His other son Thomas George was born in 1911 and became a Justice of the Peace in New Guinea -he died in 1999.
