Biography contributed by Peter Cates

Marshall Way lived at Unley with his parents and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was single, a surveyor and had been a senior cadet with the 74th Infantry at Unley.

He embarked on the Star of England for service at Gallipoli on 21 September 1915. Marshall was appointed Lance Corporal on 29 April 1916 and, in June 1916 he went to France. He was reported missing in the field at Mouquet Farm near Villers-Bretonneux on 31 August 1916, and was later confirmed dead, aged 19 years.

There is no known grave. He is commemorated with an inscription on the war Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux. A number of letters he sent to his Mother are now kept at the Australian War Memorial.

His relative, Jenny Chapman, has written Marshall's story for various publications.
