War Service/Promotions:
Joined Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 21 July 1915, Temporary transfer to 3rd British Ammunition Column. On 22 November 1915 he was transferred to 9th Battery, at Gallipoli. Left Gallipoli Peninsula on Ulysses and disembarked at Alexandria, Egypt, 22 December 1915. Transferred to 4th Artillery Division at Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt, on 27 February 1916. Taken on Strength of 24th Howitzer Bde. and posted to 110th Battery on 23 March 1916 at Tel-el-Kebir. Proceeded to join British Expeditionary Force at Alexandria, Egypt on 3 June 1916. Disembarked at Marseilles, France on 13 August 1916. On 30 October 1916 he had a broken denture and was transferred to the 140th Field Ambulance; next day was admitted to the 24th Field Artillery Brigade Hospital. He rejoined his unit from hospital on 4 November 1916. On 25 January 1917 he was transferred to 10th Field Artillery Brigade, then posted to the 38th Battery. On 22 March 1917 he was sent to the Field Ambulance with influenza, and then to England from Boulogne, France, per St Denis and admitted to Passmore Edwards Hospital, Acton, on 8 April 1917. (In 1915, during World War I, it was renamed Acton Hospital. One ward was set aside for military patients, while the Committee Room was converted into a ward, also for sick and wounded servicemen). John stayed in England until he was sent back to Rouelles, France, on 9 August 1917. He was marched out to 4th Division Artillery on 12 August 1917, and then transferred to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade on 14 August 1917, rejoining the 38th Battery in the Field on 16 August. He was wounded in action (gassed), on 27 October 1917, and admitted to 14 Australian Field Ambulance and sent on 8 November 1917 to the 26th General Hospital in Etaples, France. He eventually rejoined the 38th Battery again on 28 January 1918. On 8 August 1918 he was wounded for a second time with a gunshot wound to the right hand, and admitted to the 22nd General Hospital in Dannes, France, on 9 August 1918. He was transferred to England on 13 August 1918 and admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital, Kings Heath, Birmingham. He was transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield, Weymouth, on 21 August 1918. returning to Australia on 3 September 1918.

Fate: Returned to Australia 27 December 1918 per H.T. Sardinia. He married Eileen Maude Louise Loane, 11 November 1919, St John's Church, Launceston, Tas.
