67 years ago today, on the 8th August 1958, Private Randall Lane, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-2380), carpenter from Fleming Street, Linwood (Wickham), New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 63. ANGLICAN 3-201. 36.

Born at Wickham, New South Wales on the 27th April 1895 as Randle to Alfred Samuel, died 28.6.1953, 16 Bryant Street, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., age 88, buried at ANGLICAN 1-46. 42, and Mary Ann Lane nee Acres, died 30.10.1935, 11 Stedman Street, Mayfield West, N.S.W., age 65, mother of 7?, sleeping at ANGLICAN 1-46. 42; husband of Olive Lane nee Crockett, married 28.9.1918, Wickham, N.S.W., died 25.10.1967, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 73, sleeping here, Randall enlisted on the 8th September 1915 with the 30th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A67 Orsova on the 11th March 1916.

Transferred to 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion 4.6.1916.

Wounded in action - 26.7.1916 (GSW or SW right knee, mild, Battle of Pozieres).

Admitted to hospital 27.7.1916.

Embarked for England 18.8.1916.

Admitted to hospital 19.8.1916.

Commenced return to Australia 16.10.1916.

Randall was invalided home on the 2nd December 1916, being discharged medically unfit on the 5th February 1917.

A  welcome home was given for Randall and Private Albert James Whalan. This was a public welcome home and presentation of gifts to Randall at the Wickham School of Arts.

Also welcomed home was Private Albert James Whalan, referred to as Bert, 4th Battalion (Reg No-788), engine driver and coal miner from 116 Hannell Street, Linwood (Wickham), New South Wales and Denison Street, Carrington, N.S.W., enlisted 29.8.1914, an Original Anzac, admitted to hospital - 21.10.1915 (pyrexia), 12.11.1915 (paratyphoid), RTA invalided 8.3.1916 with enteric fever, died 24.5.1945, age 61, resting at CATHOLIC 2-61. 147, unmarked grave, wooden cross erected 25.5.2020. I submitted an application to DVA December 2020 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, and this was accepted October 2021, completed April 2023 - https://connect.dva.gov.au/.../viewCommemoration.html....

Mr. Lane’s name has been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board.

I have placed poppies at Randall’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
