Help us honour George Henry Marsh's service by contributing information, stories, and images so that they can be preserved for future generations.

Biography contributed by Cowell RSL

George was the middle son of three boys born to William Henry Marsh and Ellen Godfrey Marsh.

It is not known when the Marsh family left Carrieton, but it is known that the mother, Ellen died at Port Lincoln in 1905. George (Harry) was a well-known and respected carpenter at Franklin Harbour and played football in Cowell.

George enlisted at Oaklands training camp South Australia on 13 January 1915. He was allotted to the 7th Reinforcements for the 9th Light Horse Regiment and after weeks of intensive training, embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, aboard HMAT A61 Kanowna on 24 June 1915.

After further training in Egypt, Private Marsh with the remainder of the 7th Reinforcements were taken on the strength of the 9th Light Horse Regiment at Gallipoli on 2 October 1915.

On 2 December he was invalided to Mudros with jaundice and after a short stay in hospital embarked for Egypt and disembarked at Alexandria on 27 December 1915.

Upon return to Egypt, George transferred to the Artillery, deploying to the Western Front and serving with various units and batteries in France until he was severely wounded on 9 August 1918 whilst serving as a Driver with 14th Field Artillery Brigade, in the area of Amiens. The Battle of Amiens (8-11 August 1918) became known as ‘The Beginning of the End of the Great War’.

George (Harry) died of his wounds on 12 August 1918 and was buried at the Terlincthun British Cemetery, France. Driver Marsh had given 3 years of active service including postings at Gallipoli, Egypt and France.

George’s older brother John Marsh enlisted in December 1914 and was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for bravery whilst serving as a Corporal in the 48th Battalion. He returned to Australia in December 1918.

George’s younger brother Arthur was a Corporal in 12th Battalion when he was killed in action at Bullecourt on 5 May 1917.
