He joined the 11th Australian Infantry Regiment, at the age of 15, a s Bugler, and in 1904 resigned and joined up with No. 1 Battery, A.F.A., as Trumpeter, later joining ranks. He was discharged in 1909, but rejoined the A.F.A. in 1912, qualifying for commissioned rank in 1913.
