Son of James Vincent O'Connor and Elizabeth O'Connor nee Craig of McKillop Street, East Geelong, Victoria.

Served his coach painting apprenticeship with W. Egan of James Street, Geelong, Victoria. 

Commenced return to Australia on 27 August 1917 aboard HTNZ Pakehe disembarking on 12 September 1917

During 1928c Gabriel married Mary Magdelan Poliness in Victoria
