Served during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
63 years ago today, on the 14th March 1959, Private Robert Purdy Webb (enlisted as Robert Brennan), 1st Australian Machine Gun Battalion (Reg No-276), labourer from Winton, Queensland and 112 Cleary Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. ANGLICAN 2-128. 50.
Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 19th June 1893 to Robert and Mary Ann Webb; husband of Ruby Brenda Webb nee Stout (married 1925, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1968, sleeping here), Robert enlisted February 1916 at Townsville, Queensland.
Admitted to hospital 11.8.1917 (ulcers on arms).
Wounded in action - 31.10.1917 (gas shell).
Robert returned home July 1919, being discharged on the 11th September 1919.
I have not located Mr. Webb’s name inscribed or any known War Memorial or Roll of Honour.
I have placed poppies at Robert’s Commonwealth War Graves Plaque in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Service record states Died after Discharge,11.3.1959.
