Alfred was born 16 Apr 1896 in Townsville, son of Hugh Alexander Shanks and Martha Smith. He enlisted 4 Apr 1915 in Townsville and embarked from Brisbane on 24 May 1915 aboard HMAT A11 “Ascanius”. Private Shanks served on Gallipoli and on the Western Front with the 7th Field Ambulance. He was wounded in action (gas poisoning) on 29 Oct 1917 in Belgium. He returned to Australia 24 Jan 1918 and was discharged 18 Apr 1918.
He married Iris Lamington Collins on23 Mar 1921. He died 13 May 1974. Alfred was a linotype operator with N.Q. Newspapers.

SHANKS, Alfred Glendower. Private, No. 3749, 7th Field Ambulance. Born at Townsville in 1896, and educated at West End State School and Townsville Grammar School. Son of Hugh Alexander and Martha Graham (nee Smith) Shanks, of Walker Street West, Townsville. Enlisted at Townsville and went to Thursday Island. Returned to Brisbane, and embarked for Egypt on 25th April 1915; then to Gallipoli, and was invalided in November to England. Sent to France, and served there till October, 1917, when he was gassed while stretcher bearing, and sent to Birmingham and Dartford Hospitals. Returned to Australia in January, 1918..." - from Queenslanders who fought in the Great War.
