'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.
In the attack on POLYGON Wood on 26th and 27th September, after the first objective had been taken he organised the line and superintended the consolidation. For two days and two nights he worked unceasingly, moving up and down the line, at times under intense H.E. shell fire and setting a fine example of courage and unselfishness. On the evening of the 26th when two violent counter attacks were delivered from the right flank and some of the troops on the right flank broke away, he moved off to the right flank and restored the line and strengthened it with other troops. In one place he had a captured enemy machine gun mounted in position.
His conduct and work were so cool and sound that it had a steadying effect on all ranks at a critical time.
